What it connects

An intercom network exists so a decision at the gate can be checked with the person it affects, in seconds, without a mobile number.

• Gate to flat - the guard confirms a visitor with the resident before entry, instead of guessing.
• Gate to guard room - a second point that can authorise or escalate without leaving position.
• Internal extensions - flat to flat, or department to department, on a closed network that does not depend on mobile signal or credit.
• EPABX trunk handling - external lines routed to the right extension, so the society or plant office has a single number that reaches the right person.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Almost every society security failure that involves a stranger being let in has the same shape: the guard could not quickly verify whether the visitor was expected, and made a judgement call under social pressure at a gate with a queue behind them. A working intercom removes the judgement call. It converts "he said he was expected" into a five-second confirmation. No camera prevents that incident; a working intercom often does.

Factory and plant use

On industrial sites the same network handles gate-to-security-office verification for vehicles and contractors, and internal extensions between production, stores, weighbridge and administration. On a large plant this is frequently more reliable than mobile - there is no dependence on network coverage in a shed full of steel, and no per-call cost that discourages people from making the call.
