Most home systems fail for boring reasons
Home CCTV rarely fails because someone defeated it. It fails because a camera was aimed at a wall of glare and every daytime clip is unusable, because the recorder was sized for a week and the incident was noticed on day nine, or because nobody ever checked whether the system was still recording after a power cut two months ago.
Those are all design and maintenance problems, and they are all avoidable. Here is what we specify for an independent house.
What a properly designed home system covers
- Main gate and approach — a face-usable camera at entry height, not a rooftop wide shot that captures the top of a head.
- Front door — paired with a video door phone so you can identify a visitor before unlocking.
- Rear and service entrance — the entry point most commonly left uncovered, and the one most commonly used.
- Compound perimeter — boundary coverage with night-usable infrared, not just daytime colour.
- Parking and two-wheeler area — angled to read number plates, which needs different placement from general coverage.
What we will tell you that a box-shifter will not
You do not need the highest-resolution camera on the price list for every position. Higher resolution eats storage, which shortens how far back you can look. On most home installs the right answer is fewer, better-placed cameras with longer retention - and we will show you that trade-off in the quote rather than quietly picking one for you.
We will also tell you when you do not need us. If your requirement is a single doorbell camera, say so and we will point you at the sensible off-the-shelf option instead of selling you a recorder.

How many cameras does a typical independent house need?
Most independent homes are properly covered by four to eight cameras: the main gate, the front door, the rear or service entrance, the compound perimeter and the parking area. More cameras is not better security - the right angles are. We survey the property and tell you where footage will actually be usable rather than selling you a fixed package.
Can I view my home cameras on my phone?
Yes. Every system we install is configured for mobile viewing on Android and iPhone, with live view and playback. We set it up on your phone during handover and show you how to export a clip, because the time you need footage is the worst time to be learning the app.
Will the cameras keep recording during a power cut?
Only if the recorder and cameras are on backup. We fit the system to a UPS or inverter supply so recording continues through a normal outage - and we tell you upfront how long the backup will hold, rather than leaving you to discover it during a break-in.
How long is footage stored?
Storage is a design decision, not an accident. Typical home installs retain 15 to 30 days depending on camera count, resolution and hard-disk size. We ask how far back you would realistically need to look, then size the disk for it and show you the number in the quote.
Do you install video door phones separately from CCTV?
Yes, either together or on their own. A video door phone answers a different question from CCTV: CCTV tells you what happened, a door phone tells you who is there before you open the door. Most homes benefit from both, and they can be installed in one visit.
