CCTV tells you what happened. Access control decides what is allowed to happen. On industrial sites it is usually the higher-value system, and usually the more under-specified one.

Credential types
The right credential depends on how many people need access, how often they change, and how much friction the entry point can tolerate.
- Card and tag - fast, cheap to issue and easy to revoke. Best where the population is large or turns over often, such as contractors and temporary staff.
- PIN - no hardware to issue or lose. Weakest where codes are shared, so it suits low-sensitivity doors rather than restricted areas.
- Biometric - fingerprint or face, tied to the individual and not transferable. The right answer where a credential being shared or passed back would defeat the purpose.
Where the value actually is
Most sites buy access control for the front door and stop. The return is much higher one layer in.
- Per-door rights - a credential that opens the main gate should not automatically open the finished-goods store, the server room or the cash office.
- Per-shift time windows - a day-shift contractor badge that works at 3pm should not work at 3am.
- Contractor and visitor scoping - temporary access that expires by design, rather than a badge that is still live two years after the vendor left.
- Audit trail - a searchable record of who entered where and when, which is what turns an incident from an argument into a fact.
The failure everyone repeats
The most common access control failure is not a technical breach - it is a credential list nobody maintains. Ex-employees and departed contractors stay active because deactivation was never anybody's job. We set the system up so revocation is a single, obvious action, and we will say plainly during handover that the system is only as good as the discipline of removing people from it.

What happens to the doors during a power failure or fire?
This is a critical design decision, not a detail. Doors are configured either fail-safe (unlock on power loss, prioritising escape) or fail-secure (stay locked, prioritising asset protection), and fire escape routes have legal requirements. We go through this door by door during the survey and document which behaviour each one is set to.
Can access control work with our existing doors?
Usually yes, though the lock hardware often needs replacing. What matters more is the door and frame itself: electronic control on a weak frame is theatre. We assess the physical door alongside the electronics and will tell you if the frame is the actual weak point.
How many users can the system hold?
Capacity varies by controller model and is a specification we confirm against your headcount during the survey, including contractor and visitor volume, rather than quoting a general figure here.
Can we control access from a central point across multiple gates?
Yes, networked controllers allow central administration of rights across multiple doors and gates. For multi-gate societies and larger plants this is normally the right architecture, because per-door administration is the thing that quietly stops happening.
